Mr. Eythan Lockett

As a graduate at Knox Academy, I am excited to continue my involvement with the school as a teacher. This is my first official teaching position, but I have helped teach classes and mentor students throughout my years at Knox.

My goal as this year’s Latin teacher is to give students a clear understanding of Latin grammar. My goal is for each of my students to have a solid foundation in Latin grammar that they can use to learn other languages and further expand their knowledge in English.

In my 3rd through 6th grade classes, we start by drilling their vocabulary, along with the grammar rule that we are focusing on for the week. We spend the rest of class putting the vocab and rules they have learned to use by forming Latin sentences. The majority of my students love Latin and are eager to learn new material. Most of them are actually excited for quiz days because they know we get to learn the next lesson’s vocabulary after.

My Upper School Latin class is heavily focused on the many Latin noun and verb endings. These endings are crucial to translating Latin, and are, in my opinion, the most important part of the language. In each lesson my students are given a new set of endings to learn, along with vocabulary that uses these endings. Throughout the lesson, my students translate sentences using the new material. They are also learning a famous Latin saying, and English derivatives for the words they learn as well. Because the skill level in this class is so diverse, teaching this class has been difficult for me. However, lately, we have been making great progress, and even the first year Latin students are becoming confident in translating Latin sentences.
